UM Alum David Magee Selected by Alabama Media Group to Lead Ventures Initiative
There are many notable, exemplary University of Mississippi alumni and among them is David Magee.
This week, Alabama Media Group’s president Tom Bates named David Magee as vice president of Ventures. In this capacity, Magee will be executive producer of Amazing Alabama, an original documentary series under production, as well as publisher of Birmingham Magazine.
Tom Bates said in the announcement Monday: “David’s background in both business and journalism make him a fantastic choice to collaborate with our sales and content executives to expand our company’s portfolio. With Amazing Alabama we have an unprecedented opportunity to celebrate the richness and vibrancy of our state. With Birmingham magazine, we have the chance to build on decades of leading our community.
Those who know Magee well would not be surprised at this promotion. David Magee, an alum of the University of Mississippi, has an impressive resume: an award-winning daily newspaper columnist; newspaper editor for Birmingham News, The Huntsville Times and The Mobile Press-Register; editor of Birmingham Magazine; managing editor of International Business Times; assistant managing editor of the Jackson Clarion-Ledger; and news editor of The Oxford Eagle.
He also worked as a literary publisher and editor involved with works like John McNally’s Ghosts of Chicago, Bob Skilnik’s Beer and Food: An American History and Will Campbell’s Forty Acres and a Goat.
Dean Will Norton said, “David is a talented professional who has a grasp of the possibilities for journalism that I find very informative. I try to talk to him periodically to get brought up to date on trends, and that is why his recent promotion is no surprise. I have the highest respect for David, not just as a professional. He is a person who is committed to excellence. I am proud that he is a graduate of Ole Miss who majored in journalism.”
Magee is an author of a dozen nonfiction books of which one, The Education of Mr. Mayfield: An Unusual Story of Social Change at Ole Miss, has been optioned for a major motion picture.
He also served as a city council member in Oxford, his childhood home where he grew up playing on William Faulkner’s land as his father, the late Dr. Lyon Magee, served as the chairman of the university’s department of biology.
The University of Mississippi is well-represented by alumni such as David Magee.
