The Piecemakers Quilt Guild of the Oxford Mississippi Area is sponsoring a magnificent quilt exhibit (shown above and below) which is now being displayed at the Powerhouse Community Arts Center. The exhibit, the third to be displayed at the Powerhouse, varies in scope and completely drapes the walls of its main hall.
The Guild was founded in 1992 and provides individuals the opportunity to grow and develop artistically and technically in areas of quilt making and to gain knowledge of the history of quilts.
According to its mission statement; the group is an active guild with 27 members who meet monthly to view trunk shows, conduct demonstrations and learn new techniques. Members of the guild also hold workshops to teach others the craft of quilting and invite well-known experts to instruct them in the design of new quilt patterns.
Guild members craft quilts for a number of charitable organizations on a regular basis including; the local Veteran’s Administration, Interfaith Compassion Ministry and the Department of Children’s Services of the DHS.
Oxford’s local guild will also be an intricate part of the upcoming Fiber Arts Festival presented by Knit1Oxford. The festival, which is held at the Powerhouse, draws crafts artists from over six states who participate by exhibiting their work, demonstrating their process and hosting workshops over the course of the festival weekend.
Currently, the University Museum on campus has an extraordinary exhibit featuring artist Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry and her exhibit titled “40 Years of Color, Light, & Motion.” Fallert-Gentry is a contemporary artist who uses quilt and fiber as her medium and, currently, a piece of her work hangs in the Powerhouse along with other local artists.
The Piecemakers Quilt Guild is a member of the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council and wishes to express its thanks to YAC executive director Wayne Andrews and facilities director Andy Douglas for their tireless effort in mounting this show.
Guests and new members are always welcome to join the guild. For more information, call 662-234-2907.
