Regents School of Oxford Packs 10,000 Meals for Oxford and Haiti
Regents School of Oxford packed 10,000 meals to send a local charity and an orphanage in Haiti.
Feed the Need has helped raise over $70,000 so far. The fundraiser partnered up with Feed the Hungry, a global food charity, to send meals to local and global communities.
According to Feed the Hungry, the charity has delivered more than $2 million dollars of food to hungry people in 92 nations. Through feeding the hungry, they strive to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ and give hope to people. Regents is one school that partnered up with them to help feed more hungry families.
Rachel Rowe, the event director for the Feed the Need pack-a-thon at Regents, said 1,500 of the meals will stay in Oxford and the rest will go to an orphanage in Haiti.
“Part of the food will stay local and go to the food pantry,” Rowe said, “and 8,500 meals will go to Haiti.”
Rowe said she first worked with Feed the Hungry at a previous pack-a-thon on the Ole Miss campus. After going on a Feed the Hungry mission trip she said she wanted to bring Feed the Hungry to Oxford.
“We are going to give back to the community,” Rowe said. “It’s kind of like bringing the mission trip to the gym.”
The school’s gym was set up with tables, boxes, hair nets and gloves for the students, parents and teachers pack the meals. The younger students separated into teams “Red” and “Green” to race to see which team could pack the most boxes. Each package includes 240 meals. The packages include protein soy, dehydrated vegetables, a scoop of vitamins and rice.
“To me, the most wonderful part of this is that we are packing these meals and 1,500 will stay here and the rest will go to Haiti,” Tiffany Taylor, parent and day of the event coordinator, said. “The school will also have the Daraja Children’s Choir of Africa on Monday at 9 a.m. to come sing.”
Ole Miss cheerleaders and the Rebel Black Bear also came to Regents to help pack meals. They led the students in cheers and encouraged them as each meal was packed with love and kindness. This is the first Feed the Hunger pack-a-thon the school has hosted, and they hope to do more to engage their students in mission work.
Regents School of Oxford encourages readers to donate to the Feed the Need to continue to help feed families in need. Donations can be made here.
