Ranking the SEC top QB’s after Week 13

It hasn’t been a stellar season behind center in the SEC. By my count, nearly two-thirds of the teams in the league either dealt with an injury to their starter, or simply replaced their signal-caller because of ineffectiveness at some point during the season.

Here’s a partial list — off the top of my head — of people who have started or played significant time at quarterback for an SEC team at some point this season: Perry Orth, Kyler Murray, Sean White, Lorenzo Nunez, Jake Hubenak, Faton Bauta, Drew Barker, Sean White, Cooper Bateman and … Whoever Plays QB for Vanderbilt.

You get the idea. This ranking below is impressive in the first few spots, but finding 10 good quarterbacks in the SEC is a reach this season.

Here’s how things stand for SEC QBs after 13 weeks of football:

Robert Nkemdiche Receives SEC Weekly Honor

After helping Ole Miss to a 38-27 road win in the annual Egg Bowl against No. 21 Mississippi State, junior defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche was named a co-Defensive Lineman of the Week by the Southeastern Conference on Monday.

Nkemdiche, a native of Loganville, Georgia, had four tackles and a career-best 1.5 sacks in the victory, which was the Rebels’ first in Starkville since 2003. His pressure on Dak Prescott and the MSU backfield helped Ole Miss amass nine tackles for loss and a season-high seven sacks. They forced Prescott into an interception (returned by Tony Bridges for a touchdown) and a fumble lost.

It has been a historic season for Nkemdiche and Ole Miss so far. The Rebels defeated Alabama, Auburn and LSU in the same season for the first time ever and beat Alabama and Auburn on the road for the first time. Their 6-2 SEC record and second-place SEC West finish are the best since 2003, while their four wins over ranked teams are the most since 1969.

This is the second SEC weekly honor of the season for Nkemdiche, who was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week after a road win at No. 2 Alabama. He shares this week’s honor with Arkansas DE Deatrich Wise Jr.

The 16th-ranked Rebels now await their bowl fate, which will be announced next Sunday following Saturday’s league championship games.

New Bowl Projections

If you think we need an eight-team Playoff, take a look at the schedule for the final weekend of the regular season. The four-team tournament is meeting you halfway anyway.

Iowa and Michigan State will meet in the Big Ten Championship for a Playoff play-in game. Clemson and North Carolina are in the ACC Championship for what seems like another (the Heels should rank comfortably in the top 10 going in and, with a win, would jump Clemson and the B1G title loser, plus get the bumps from a conference title and beating the No. 1 team).

A 25-point Florida loss to Florida State means the SEC Championship likely only has one Playoff contender, and the Pac-12’s game might end up not having any, despite Stanford winning an eliminator against Notre Dame this weekend.

Seems like we can expect to have at least one play-in game in the final weekend of the season in most years. So we can pretend the Playoff’s expanded just a little bit, but not too much yet.
