SEC Power Rankings: Ole Miss’ Western Division Run Ends on a Penalty in Overtime
In a game in which the Ole Miss offense played the game of the year, the Ole Miss defense played its worst game of the year.
The end result: a devastating loss to Arkansas for the second consecutive year. While the offense tabulated 590 total yards, the defense surrendered 605 while giving up 34 first downs! The Hogs averaged 10.2 yards per catch while keeping the football for 41 minutes.
The Landshark defense simply failed to show.
Anyone who attended the shootout could not complain about getting value for their money. However, the outcome will be remembered as one of the toughest losses in Ole Miss history. Now owning a 7-3 record, the remaining two games are both uphill challenges with a 7-5 season outcome likely after having such a promising start.
In another strange affair of the exact opposite tempo, Florida held off Vanderbilt 9-7 while the Commodores were completing three passes for 30 yards for the entire game! The victory enabled the Gators to claim the eastern division officially despite the ugly win.
Elsewhere, Tennessee struggled with South Carolina 27-24 in Knoxville as Georgia was routing Kentucky 27-3 in Athens. Auburn surprised Texas A&M 26-10 in College Station for the Aggies’ third loss.
Alabama in all likelihood wrapped up another SEC West title with a 30-16 thrashing of LSU. The Tide defense was relentless in containing LSU’s star running back for most of the night (31 total yards). Bama still has Mississippi State and Auburn left on the road which will not be easy by any measure. State defeated Missouri earlier in the week 31-13 taking its season worksheet to 7-2.
Alabama more than justified its entry into the final four playoff at season’s end as the Tide is now the only SEC team that remains with a legitimate chance. Should Mississippi State upset Alabama this coming weekend, the SEC champion will be watching the playoff from the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.
