Oxford School District Nursing and School Wellness Hosts Breast Cancer Awareness Month Event
In observance of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Oxford School District (OSD) Nursing and School Wellness Department is hosting a community event to raise awareness about breast cancer.
The event will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, in the school library at Oxford High School with featured presenter Wanda Barbour Dent, R.N., Cancer Navigator with Baptist Cancer Center — North Mississippi. Oxford High School is located at 101 Charger Loop in Oxford.
Dent will provide a general overview of breast cancer, the risks, prevention and early detection. She will also discuss services that are provided by the Baptist Cancer Center in Oxford, as well as provide information on a program that the hospital offers for women who need a mammogram, but do not have the insurance to cover health costs or who cannot afford the services. The mammogram program is provided at no cost to women who qualify and is funded in large part by the generous donations made to the Baptist Cancer Center by the Ole Miss Panhellenic Council’s annual CARE Walk and through a Susan G. Komen Grant.
“We are all touched by breast cancer in some way in our lifetime,” said OSD Head Nurse Meg Hayden, R.N. “Either we as women are at risk, or we know someone in our life who is at risk. We wanted to present an opportunity for women in our community to gain information, ask questions and find out what health services are available to them.”
As part of the National Breast Cancer Awareness community event, giveaways, door prizes, snacks and breast health information will be provided.
More information about the event can be obtained by calling OSD Head Nurse Meg Hayden, R.N., at (662) 236-1562.
