Softball: Rebels Get Two Fall Wins Over Jones
The Ole Miss softball team competed Friday in two exhibition games with Jones County Junior College, getting two more wins under their belt this fall.
In the doubleheader at the Ole Miss Softball Complex, it was the offense that stuck out for the Rebels.
Senior Natalie Martinez got things started early for Ole Miss hitting a big home run over the right field fence. Martinez hit six long balls in 2015, helping her team to a team-record 48 homeruns.
Head coach Mike Smith is pleased with the production he’s seen this fall.
“I thought we had some really good at bats,” Smith said. “I felt like after seeing the pitcher a few times we made the right adjustments and that’s when we started putting up some runs.”
On a team filled with new faces, the production also came from the newbies in the dugout.
“Some of our young kids are battling because they want to start,” Smith said. “We’ve told our returners it’s their job to lose, but the new ones want to play too. We have a large roster, but I’m okay with that because it brings competition each day.”
“We don’t have a solidified starting line up at this time. There are a few people that have stood out, so it’s going to be great as we finish the fall and get back for the spring to see where we are. Again, it’s going to be like fitting the pieces of the puzzle together.”
2015 was a banner year for Ole Miss where they set records all over the board. They batted .309 as a team, had 303 runs scored, 272 RBI and 48 home runs. They also set records in triples, walks, steals, on base percentage and slugging percentage. Smith looks to build on that success this fall, and into the spring.
“I felt like we played a pretty good overall game,” Smith added. “We had the chance to get everyone in the game, so it was a quality night for Ole Miss Softball.”
Next up for Ole Miss is a two-game tilt at home against Blue Mountain CC and Gulf Coast CC. Those games will begin at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. respectively. Admission is free for all Ole Miss home games.
