Ole Miss Softball Begins Fall Games Over the Weekend
The Ole Miss softball team began fall action over the weekend, playing three exhibition games in two days.
First up for the Rebels was a trip to Veteran’s Park in Tupelo for a charity exhibition game and clinic with in-state rival Mississippi State.
“Saturday we had a lot of first game jitters,” head coach Mike Smith said. “We rotated a lot of players in and out. The other coaches and I were just trying to get a feel for different people at different positions, so there wasn’t a lot of consistency. Overall I think it was a great clinic and great environment with the local kids, and it was great working with Mississippi State.”
After a busy Saturday in Tupelo, the team came back home for a two-game tilt, hosting Chipola College at 1:30 p.m. and Delta State at 4 p.m.
“We pitched well and swung the bats well Sunday,” Smith remarked. “I thought we played great defense and all around played really good softball. We were able to see some players that we weren’t sure how they were going to perform in some key positions.”
With a lot of newcomers on the team, some areas of the field will be up for grabs. Smith added that he hopes there will be some great competition among the team during intrasquads throughout the fall.
“Myself and our staff have a tough task at hand to figure out the puzzle.” Smith said. “That’s why we play these fall games and scrimmages to see where we are as a team.”
The Rebels have five more fall games, all at the Ole Miss Softball Complex, with the next action coming Friday with a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. against Jones County Community College.
