Yesterday, the petition to change the current mascot to the Landsharks have collected 3,616 signatures with 1,384 signatures needed to reach 5,000.

However, its founder, Sam Fowlkes, has closed the petition yesterday. He provided the following statement to the Clarion-Ledger which he also sent to HottyToddy.com.

He said, “I love this University and the future of the athletic department. I, personally, took the petition down because I care about the Landshark and working with the athletic department to potentially make changes on this campus. This process should be a collaborative effort. Out of respect for Ross Bjork and this University, I removed my petition and hope that we can have another conversation at the end of the season, when the timing is better. Thank you for your time and support.”

I hope the University considers changing it. 🙂 I like the Landsharks better than the Black Bears.

Seems LANDSHARKS has been the unofficial mascot for quite a while now…nobody could embrace the bear…I would sign petition for LANDSHARKS …Thanks to our line that came up with.

It only makes sense to change to the Landsharks. I hope the admin will take this into consideration .

WE look like idiots already…..should haven ever been changed to start with but the landshark is way way better than the Bear. The bear does not fit in at all with the program. I vote 100% for Landshark…..

For the guy that says lets change back to Rebels. We ARE the Rebels. The Ole Miss Rebels. That isn’t going to change. Now as for the mascot, I’m fine without one like we were from around 03-08. Mascots are for kids and the kids do like the bear. The landshark is neat as well and has caught on with all the athletic teams throwing it up. Lets just all pull the same direction and quit whining over something while we are having a great season. #HottyToddy

Oh my. I’m an Alumnus of Ole Miss and live in South Florida. Today I threw up my fins sign and told a Florida fan “Fins up, Gators down.” LOL. Please keep the shark…I was afraid there was a change already that I didnt’ know about and that we were bears. IF we change again there is too much confusion. I have the “Rebels” frame around my car tag. Yes, we are forever Rebels and now our mascot gets to be the Landshark! 🙂 It lends itself to so much fun and marketing capabilities.

You’ve got to be kidding fellas. Umm, if you wanted the Land Sharks, you could have voted for the Land Sharks when we had the vote. But no, most of you held out of the vote because you were mad about the Colonel still. In any case, the bear won the vote. You know why. It was the best one! Rebel the Black Bear is a tradition now. We won’t be changing.

The Rebel is the One and Only true mascot. No matter how many times you think you can change him, there will still be those of us who will pass on the true identity.
