ESPN: Ole Miss No. 1 in Nation
This week’s ESPN Football Power Index has the Ole Miss Rebels as the number one team in the nation followed by Ohio State, TCU and USC.
SEC notables are Georgia at number 5; LSU at number 6; Alabama at number 7; and Texas A&M at number 8. Auburn has fallen to number 27.
The Football Power Index is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 10,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule.
Ole Miss’ current FPI is 27.7 compared to 23.2 for Alabama. The index predicts the Rebels to win 10.5 games and have a 31.8 percent chance of winning the SEC. The FPI indicates the Rebels have a 7.4 percent chance of going undefeated. Alabama, on the other hand, has a 6.5 percent chance of winning the conference and only .5 percent of going undefeated.
The remainder of Ole Miss’ opponents are ranked accordingly: LSU 6, Alabama 7, Texas A&M 8, Arkansas 19, Florida 24, Mississippi State 26, Auburn 27, Memphis 48, Vanderbilt 63 and New Mexico State 121.

I’m an Ole Miss grad, Class of ’91, and our team looks strong so far this year. I’m cautious with this ranking cause to me it looks like someone is trying to give Alabama a little more motivation for Saturday’s game. As if they didn’t have enough already after we upset them in Oxford last year.

You do realize they haven’t played anyone worth anything so far. Start playing ranked teams then you can be number one but beating a high school team and letting them score is kind of awful

Typical Ole Miss. Can’t win the National title on national signing day and you can’t use this index as a measure when the best team you have played is, I forget. Who has Ole Miss played so far this year.

Let’s see, if they have LSU at #6, then Ole Miss should finish no lower than 43rd! This is too comical for words!

Funny how much this bothers some of you. It’s not our fault ESPN Has us at #1 in this poll. This poll isn’t based on voters and biased though. It’s simply statistical and ESPN really likes it this year. They keep showing the percentages over and over for different teams. Like Jacksonville St had a 2.5% chance of beating auburn this past weekend.

Well you must be either a state fan or an alabama fan. But middle Tennessee and southern ms are rated so high. And neither win was impressive. Watch the game as ole miss whips both state and alabama

Men can be so hateful when it comes to sports. The truth is this is going to be a killer game. Alabama can’t say thay know they are going to win and that they are not scared to death. So what we haven’t played anyone yet you know we have the talent to come home with the W. There’s a lot of smart people on ESPN and they know what they are looking at. I don’t pretend to but sounds good to me

Great article, Steve! We miss you and Rosie in Madison.
This was the most exciting football game that took two days to win! The 66 yard touchdown should be the play of the week!

To all of you haters….
Do you think that Alabama is a high school team too? I’m proud of those boys that showed up and showed out last night. Hotty Damn Toddy!

Great article! It is no surprise that there would be negative comments but name calling… I guess this forum is open to the not so mature crowd too. Chad Kelly is the “real deal”, he’s a scrapper, he’s a winner, and yes he has a not so perfect past. But don’t we all? He chose Ole Miss for Freeze and this path will lead him to great things on and off the field. I was at the game and it amazed me that Kelly handled that crowd noise and Alabama dominant environment with such poise and confidence. I cannot wait to watch his career progress. No need for hypothetical arguments right now. The end results will tell the truth!
