Developing Story: DSU Students Moved to Safety Following Monday’s Shooting
One person was killed in a shooting on the Delta State University Campus in Cleveland today.
WLBT reports that Ethan A. Schmidt, an assistant professor of American history, was shot and killed in his office in Jobe Hall, which is located near the quad at the center of the DSU campus.
WLBT also reports that another professor, 45-year-old Dr. Shannon Lamb, is a person of interest in the shooting. Lamb is also a suspect in the murder of a woman in Gautier this morning. Lamb is employed by DSU as a geography teacher, having joined the staff in 2009.
University officials sent out an alert to students around 10:40 a.m. stating that a shooter was at large near Jobe Hall.
DSU officials are clearing the academic buildings on campus for the safety of all students and staff. According to Delta State’s Twitter Account, all students and staff have been moved to the Sillers Coliseum, where administrators and counselors are working to get food and water to them. Students currently in residence halls are being asked to remain there.
The Cleveland School District confirmed to the Clarion-Ledger that all local schools are also on lockdown.
Cleveland police are assisting DSU police with the investigation, but neither department will confirm whether or not the shooter is still active. The Bolivar County Sheriff’s Department and Mississippi Bureau of Investigations are also assisting in the search.
