Peggie Gillom-Granderson To Receive Nathaniel Northington Groundbreaker in Athletics Award
Former Ole Miss women’s basketball standout and current Ole Miss Fellowship of Christian Athletes women’s chaplain, Peggie Gillom-Granderson will receive the Nathaniel Northington Groundbreaker in Athletics Award in conjunction with the University of Mississippi’s third annual Racial Reconciliation Week. Gillom will be honored with an on-field presentation during the Ole Miss vs. Fresno State football game on Sept. 12.
Gillom, Ole Miss’ all-time leading scorer and rebounder with 2,489 career points and 1,271 career rebounds, joins Nathaniel Northington, former Ole Miss football coach Billy Brewer, and Brad Gaines as winners of the Nathaniel Northington Groundbreaker in Athletics award.
The Abbeville, Miss., native has long used the game of basketball to make an impact in her community and continues to use sport as a way to reach young people in her duties as the Ole Miss FCA women’s chaplain. Gillom, a 2013 inductee into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, has served as an assistant coach of the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team as well as the 1999 U.S. Pan American Games squad. A champion for diversity, Gillom will serve on a Racial Reconciliation Week panel alongside Northington and former Ole Miss football player Deterrian Shackelford, discussing diversity in athletics. The panel will be held on Thursday (Sept. 10) at 7 pm at Overby Hall.
