MDOT Invests in Transportation Infrastructure and Economic Development beyond Highways

The Mississippi Transportation Commission (MTC) recently approved the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) awarding grants to regional and municipal airports across the state for maintenance and improvement projects.

“Local airports are vital to the economy of a rural state like Mississippi,” said Transportation Commissioners Dick Hall, Tom King and Mike Tagert in a joint statement by the MTC. “Whether the airport’s primary purpose is agriculture or commercial travel, these grants will help make needed improvements that will continue to support local economic growth and development.”

Grants were approved for the following airports in Mississippi.

·$373,619 – Bruce Campbell Field, Madison: Complete site work; construct new hangar.

· $193,249 – Cleveland Municipal Airport, Cleveland: Replace asphalt apron with concrete apron; install new fueling area.

· $135,000 – Columbia-Marion County Airport, Columbia: Remove existing underground fuel tanks; install new 12,000-gallon aboveground fuel tank.

· $45,485 – George M. Bryan Field, Starkville: Purchase new ground support equipment.

· $296,747 – Greenwood-Leflore County Airport, Greenwood: Complete Phase III of rehabilitation of crosswind runway.

· $486,230 – Grenada Municipal Airport, Grenada: Construct 10,000-square-foot box hangar.

· $31,300 – Golden Triangle Regional Airport, Columbus: Install bus waiting area connecting airport to Starkville.

· $355,936 – Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional Airport, Moselle: Rehabilitate existing airport hangars.

· $42,885 – Louisville-Winston County Airport, Louisville: Purchase new ground support equipment.

· $149,000 – Meridian Regional Airport, Meridian: Purchase new aircraft ground support equipment.

· $386,665 –Mid-Delta Regional Airport, Greenville: Complete Phase III rehabilitation of fire suppression system.

· $199,399 –Monroe County Airport, Aberdeen: Construct asphalt apron; rework taxiways for additional apron space.

· $416,245 – Natchez-Adams County Airport, Natchez: Construct T-hangar apron.

· $150,400 – New Albany-Union County Airport, New Albany: Rehabilitate existing hangars.

· $235,440 – Roscoe Turner Field, Corinth: Rehabilitate existing hangars.

· $11,945 – Stennis International Airport, Bay St. Louis: Match funds for a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) fiscal year 2015 project to acquire an Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicle.

· $131,967 – Tishomingo County Airport, Iuka: Replace fixed-based operator (FBO) building.
MDOT’s responsibilities include maintaining and improving the state’s highways and interstates, but also focus on providing a safe intermodal transportation network for airports, ports and waterways, railroads and public transit systems. Each of these modes of transportation plays a vital role in transporting goods and services that promote economic growth and development throughout Mississippi.
