Funeral for Anthony Hervey Set for Aug. 2 in Oxford
Funeral services for black Confederate flag activist Anthony Hervey of Water Valley will be held at First Baptist Church in Oxford on Aug. 2 at 2 p.m., according to reports from The Local Voice. Funeral arrangements are reportedly being handled by Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley.
Hervey was killed in a car crash in Lafayette County on July 19 following a Confederate history rally in Birmingham, Alabama.
The Local Voice also reports that the Sons of Confederate Veterans are planning a full confederate honor funeral service for Hervey, including a procession with flag-bearers and riflemen.
A reconstruction of Hervey’s fatal crash shows the Explorer left the roadway at the crossover section of US278 and County Road 285 then continued down into the median south of US278. The Explorer reentered US278, crossed both westbound lanes and continued off the right shoulder of US278. The Explorer then collided with an embankment and concrete ditch causing the vehicle to roll over several times and coming to final rest on its roof.
Hervey was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lafayette County Coroner’s Office.
A passenger in the Explorer, Juliette Barnum of Stuart, Oklahoma, sustained injuries from the crash and was transported to Baptist North Hospital in Oxford. Investigators interviewed witnesses concerning the crash including Barnum, who stated a silver vehicle occupied by five black males was following their vehicle and swerved toward them but did not make contact.
Barnum also stated the actions of the silver vehicle caused the Explorer to leave the roadway.
Mississippi Highway Patrol is asking for the public’s help in the ongoing investigation. Anyone with information concerning the crash and possible identification of the silver vehicle may contact the Mississippi Highway Patrol at 662-563-6415.

There was an article published on July 23rd by the AP written by Emily Pettus titled “Others sought in crash that killed rebel flag supporter”.
The article essentially states: The Mississippi Highway Patrol indicated “No marks from a silver vehicle were found on the black SUV.” Also, “Another witness who observed the crash stated she saw the Explorer leave the roadway and crash, but could not confirm the presence of another vehicle,” a Highway Patrol statement said.
