Looking at Diamond Rebels’ First Opponent in Los Angeles
Let’s take a closer look at the Rebels (30-26) first round opponent for Friday evening: the Maryland Terrapins out of the Big Ten conference.
The Terps (39-21) enter the road to Omaha as the No. 3 seed in this region. Maryland is coming off a win over Illinois in the Big 10 tournament, which ended their 27-game winning streak and likely locking up a spot in the NCAA tournament for Maryland.
The Terps are led at the plate this season by redshirt sophomore Brandon Lowe, who is hitting at a .342 clip with 9 home runs, 52 RBI and 56 runs scored. While teammate Kevin Martir is right behind him with a .330 average, 7 home runs and 42 RBI.
As a club, Maryland is hitting .265 on the season, with 376 runs scored and 50 home runs. Opponents are hitting .237 against Terps hurlers on the season, with only allowing 28 balls to leave the yard.
Maryland’s pitching staff is anchored by sophomore RHP Mike Shawaryn with a 1.65 era after logging 103.1 innings over the season. Shawaryn has a record of 12-2 on the year with only giving up 25 runs on 76 hits. He has fanned 124 batters and only allowed 23 to draw a walk.
The winner will move on into the winners bracket to take on the UCLA vs CSU Bakersfield on Saturday. While the loser will drop down into the loser bracket of the regional.
Game time is set for 6 p.m. CST Friday and will be shown on ESPN3. Fans also can listen to every pitch on the Ole Miss Radio Network.
