Wyatt Short Earns All-SEC Accolades
Ole Miss baseball sophomore Wyatt Short was recognized by the coaches of the Southeastern Conference for his superb pitching out of the bullpen as he was named Second Team All-SEC, the league office announced Monday, May 18. Two all-conference teams, an all-freshman team, and an all-defense team were selected in a vote by the SEC’s 14 head coaches.
The Southaven native has been a shutdown reliever out of the Ole Miss bullpen all season long. In 21 appearances, Short has a 4-1 record, 10 saves, an impressive 1.49 ERA, 41 strikeouts, only 12 walks and just six earned runs over 36.1 innings. His win total and number of saves are team highs out of Rebel relievers as he had held opposing hitters to a .206 average at the plate. Out of his 10 saves throughout the 2015 campaign, eight of them have occurred in SEC play, which is a conference best. At one point this season, March 1 through April 18, Short surrendered just one run over 21.2 innings spanning 12 appearances.
Short has not allowed a run in 18 of his 21 appearances. In his last five outings, the southpaw has factored into the decision, recording four saves and one win. He collected two saves and a victory to help Ole Miss sweep rival Mississippi State, May 7-9. For his stellar weekend, Short was named SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week. Short’s 10 saves in 2015 are tied for fifth-most in a single season in Ole Miss history. With 13 career saves, the sophomore is already tied with Skipper Wright for sixth in the program’s record book.
