Baltimore Artist Teaches UM Students before Southside Gallery Show
If you walked around the Oxford Square on Tuesday, you may have noticed students with paint smudged on their faces and brushes in their hands applying a thick coat of color to the canvas in front of them. While this may look like a normal scene to an art student, it was a rare sight for the typical bystander.
Matt Klos visited Oxford Tuesday to teach a painting class for the art department’s very own Philip Jackson.
“I’m down from Baltimore, Maryland, for the week working with Philip Jackson’s painting class at Ole Miss,” said Klos. “Today we’re out, we’re landscape painting this week, and so we are out on the Square.”
Rather than allowing the students to paint with every color on the wheel, they were limited to a simple six-color palette.
Teaching students more about landscape painting isn’t the only reason Klos visited Oxford. His landscape paintings, along with works by Jackson, David Jewel and some Ole Miss students, will be featured in the Southside Gallery today. The Artist’s Talk begins at 6 p.m. followed by a reception from 7 to 9.
Titled Fresh Paint: Painting the Mississippi Landscape, the exhibition will conclude Philip Jackson’s two-week painting intensive at the university and will be on view from May 20 through June 14.
For more information about this Exhibition visit the Southside Art Gallery on Facebook page or call the gallery at (662) 234-9090. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
