Oxford Chargers Take on George County for 5A State Crown
The Oxford Chargers roll into Trustmark Park in Pearl Tuesday afternoon as the North Mississippi 5A Champions to battle in the state finals after defeating division rival New Hope Trojans Saturday.
The Chargers and Trojans took the series to a deciding Game 3 after Oxford won its first 32 games of the year. New Hope handed them their first loss of the season with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh at New Hope.
The Chargers gave up an early two runs Saturday, but in the bottom of the frame, Oxford quickly answered with two of their own. Oxford did not stop with two runs over the next six innings as the Chargers tacked on eight more runs.
The Chargers are looking to claim their second state crown in school history this week after missing the opportunity to compete last season with a loss to New Hope.
They will go up against the George County Rebels, who come in with a 22-6 record on the season. The Rebels are a very high-powered offense with some of the top offensive players in the state.
The first game of this best of three series will begin Tuesday at 4 p.m. with Game 2 slated for 7 p.m. Thursday.
The games can be heard locally on 95.5 FM as Don Brooks will have the call.
