Possible Shot Clock, Timeout Changes Coming for NCAA Basketball in 2015-16
In an attempt to streamline the game and remove a little lag time, the NCAA proposed a few rule changes for men’s basketball that could be in place before the 2015-16 season tips.
USA Today reported the men’s basketball rules committee announced it recommended shortening the shot clock from 35 seconds to 30 (still six seconds more than the NBA clock), increase the restricted area arc in front of the basket from three feet to four feet, and make three changes aimed at reducing timeouts.
For timeouts, the recommendations are to reduce the quantity of team timeouts from five to four (with no more than three carrying over from the first half to the second), disallowing coaches from calling timeouts in live ball situations, and making a timeout called within 30 seconds of a media timeout stand for the media timeout.
The proposal now goes to the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight panel, who decides which proposals will be enacted.
