Ole Miss Heads to California for NCAA Golf Championships
Ole Miss men’s golf returns to postseason play for the first time since 2011, when the Rebels tee off in 2015 NCAA Golf Championships Thursday.
The Rebels are one of 13 teams that will compete at The Farm Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, California May 14-16. The University of San Diego will serve as host at the 6,947 yard, par-72 course, whose notable members include PGA/LPGA major championship winners Annika Sorenstam, Phil Mickelson, Liselotte Neumann and Tom Lehman. Ole Miss is making its ninth NCAA Regional appearance, but the first since ‘11.
Joining the Rebels in the regional field is No. 1 seed Arizona State, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Virginal, Georgia, East Tennessee State, San Diego, Idaho, St. Mary’s, Wichita State and Eastern Kentucky.
“We are extremely excited to get started this week,” said first-year Rebel head coach Chris Malloy. “This is a reward for a special season and just the beginning of what can be a very special run to an NCAA Championship. We need to play relaxed confident golf to be successful this week. It is all about ball placement on this course, so there will be a premium on hitting the ball straight off of the tee.
The Rebels, who are coming off their best finish at the SEC Championships since 2012, will set a lineup of senior Blake Morris, sophomore Ben Wolcott, sophomore Noah West, freshman Josh Seiple and junior Forrest Gamble. Wolcott leads the Rebels with a 71.48 stroke average, while Morris has posted a team best two top-five finishes, including a runner-up finish at the Old Waverly Invitational last month.
Following the conclusion of the NCAA Regionals, 30 teams (top five from each of the six regional sites) will advance to the 2015 NCAA Golf Championship May 29 – June 3 at the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida, hosted by the University of South Florida. The Rebels have advanced to the NCAA Championship round four times, with the last coming in 2001.
