Softballer Elantra Cox Garners Freshman All-SEC Honors
Freshman outfielder Elantra Cox has been selected to the Southeastern Conference All-Freshman team by a vote of the league’s coaches, the conference office announced on Tuesday prior to the start of the SEC Tournament.
She is the eighth All-Freshman selection for the Rebels in the history of the program and first since current senior Allison Brown was tabbed for the honor in the 2012 season.
Cox, a native of Henderson, Tennessee, has been a driving force in the Rebel offense this season and a key component in the team tying the single-season record for wins at 30 and earning the program’s fourth berth in the conference’s annual tournament.
The freshman has started 51 games in left field for the Rebels and produced a perfect fielding percentage on the season, tallying 74 putouts and three assists in the outfield.
At the plate, Cox leads the team in average, hitting at a .383 clip and is third on the team in runs scored with 34 in the leadoff position. A blazing fast baserunner in the leadoff position, she has stolen 30 bases this season to rank fourth in the SEC in steals. Cox is second on the single-season steal list at Ole Miss and already ranks seventh for steals in a career. She has seven games this season with at least two steals recorded.
Cox leads the Rebels with 18 multiple-hit games on the season.
Ole Miss and Cox will take the field to open the SEC Tournament at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon. The Rebels will face the Georgia Bulldogs in the opening-round game with a matchup against Alabama on the line for the team that advances. It will be the fourth meeting between the Rebels and the Bulldogs this season as the two teams played a three-game series earlier this year in Oxford.
The game against Georgia can be watched on the SEC Network or online via the SEC Network+ platform. Live stats can be found at OleMissSports.com or fans can keep up with the Rebels in the tournament on Twitter by following @OleMissSoftball or on Facebook.
