Modern Languages Receives Phi Sigma Iota Chapter
The University of Mississippi is home to the newest chapter of Phi Sigma Iota international foreign language honor society.
The Chi Alpha 268 chapter is the first in Mississippi for the honorary. Phi Sigma Iota recognizes outstanding accomplishment in the study or teaching of any of the academic fields related to foreign language, literature or culture.
“The society is a perfect fit for a department such as ours, which teaches 11 modern foreign languages and which also offers courses in literature, linguistics, culture, film, teaching English as a second language and intensive English,” said Donald L. Dyer, chair of the Department of Modern Languages.
Before inductions, the department must formulate bylaws, appoint officers and install the chapter. Department officials plan to start the chapter this fall and induct students in spring 2016, Dyer said.
This honor society will give the department a way to honor students studying Arabic, Chinese, Korean and Swahili, as well as students studying in departmental disciplines.
