Summer Orientation MPower Program Seeks Inaugural Cohort

Adjusting to various aspects of college life can be a challenge for many students, but a new program at the University of Mississippi may help ease the transition to campus with an extended summer orientation program for selected participants.

The program is called MPower, and the inaugural class meets Aug. 3-6. Registration is $100 and includes three nights lodging at the Inn at Ole Miss, meals and an MPower T-shirt.

“The purpose of MPower is to develop the leadership skills of a first-year cohort, create an understanding of the University of Mississippi (including the Creed) and develop an appreciation for cultural differences and inclusivity,” said Shannon Richardson, assistant director of campus recreation. “Thirty-two students are being selected to participate in the inaugural program. Sponsors include The Inn at Ole Miss, Center for Inclusion and Cross Cultural Engagement, Department of Campus Recreation, Division of Student Affairs and the Ole Miss Student Union.”

During the three days of leadership development activities, participants will learn about team-building skills, True Colors and the Respect the M campaign. They will also tour campus, learn Ole Miss history, visit the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis and watch “Ghosts of Ole Miss” and “It’s Time” videos.

“By focusing on experiential learning, we’re preparing for future leadership on campus and beyond,” Richardson said. “Understanding and implementation of the Creed promotes cultural awareness, appreciation and inclusion. We also introduce MPower students to university programs and services.”

The application deadline is May 1. Applications will be reviewed by the MPower Committee. Those selected will be notified by email by May 15. Click here to apply.
