Former Rebel Senquez Golson Selected by Pittsburgh Steelers
A playmaker throughout his Ole Miss career, cornerback Senquez Golson is taking his talents to the next level after he was selected in the second round (56th overall selection) of the 2015 National Football League Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday evening.
Golson is the highest Ole Miss draft pick since Dexter McCluster was taken in the second round (36th overall) by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2010. He’s the first Rebel drafted by the Steelers since Mike Wallace in 2009, and he’s the first Rebel cornerback selected since Trumaine McBride in 2007.
The Rebels’ first consensus and unanimous All-American since 2008, Golson led the SEC and finished second nationally with a school record-tying 10 interceptions last year. One of his interceptions sealed a 23-17 victory over then top-ranked Alabama while he returned another 59 yards for a touchdown against Louisiana-Lafayette. The three-year starting corner from Pascagoula, Mississippi, finished the 2014 season with a nation-best 16 career interceptions.
“It’s exciting to see our rich tradition of Rebels in the NFL continue with Senquez,” head coach Hugh Freeze said. “Senquez was a big part of our bowl teams the past three years, and particularly last season in leading us to a New Year’s Six bowl. From where he was when we first arrived, I could not be prouder of how far he has come as a player and as a man, and I look forward to watching him play on Sundays.”
This is not the first time Golson has been drafted by a professional sports team. The Boston Red Sox took him in the eighth round of the 2011 MLB Draft as a center fielder before Golson elected to play football at Ole Miss.
Ole Miss has a great tradition of producing NFL talent, including 281 draft picks and 19 first-round selections. Last year, there were 23 Rebels in the league. Seven of them made the playoffs, including Super Bowl champion Brandon Bolden of the New England Patriots.
The final four rounds of this year’s draft take place Saturday.
