Sinkhole Forms on Highway 6 East in Oxford
Traffic, traffic and more traffic is happening in Oxford this morning.
The new Highway 6 and Jackson Avenue interchange opened at 1 a.m. this morning, much to the dismay of many. But it’s not the only challenge the drivers on the highway are facing. Oxford police reported a sinkhole has occurred on U.S. Highway 278 eastbound near Chucky Mullins Drive. The morning traffic is backed up more than a mile as the drivers are diverted on the median out of concern for the sinkhole spreading further.
One of the engineers said that the cause may be a road culvert that may have washed out (the dirt beneath the road) and created the sinkhole. MDOT is on its way to work on the sinkhole, but the repair may cause the road to shut down between Jackson Avenue and Chucky Mullins Drive. Oxford police say the traffic on that road will be rerouted down Jackson Avenue.
Here are social media grabs of people reacting to the sinkhole that caved in around 8:30 a.m.
My mom called the cops about the giant sinkhole in Oxford right before it caved in. She texted me: “Just saved countless lives!!!!”
