Ole Miss Rifle Shines at Junior Olympics
Several members of the Ole Miss rifle team competed in the U.S. Junior Olympics this week, and both freshman Jessica Haig and sophomore Alison Weisz turned in solid performances in air rifle and smallbore at the Olympic Training Center.
Haig (Constableville, New York) was of only two athletes to make both event finals, finishing fifth in air rifle and seventh in smallbore. Weisz (Belgrade, Montana) made the finals of air rifle and finished eighth.“All the team members who competed in this match really made Ole Miss stand out,” head coach Valerie Boothesaid. “They all worked hard and having some make the finals is just validation of their drive and skills. This is great motivation for summer training and competitions as well as preparation for next season.”
The week began with air rifle, and both Haig and Weisz qualifed for the finals. Haig shot a 412.9 the first day and then followed up with a 411.4 the second day. In the final she finished with a 98.6 to earn two points for a total of 826.3. Weisz turned in a 411.5 the first day and then posted a 409.5 the second day. In the final, she shot 78.6 and finished with a total of 822.0.
In smallbore, both Haig and Weisz shot 576 the first day. Haig followed up with a 572 on the second day to qualify for the finals, where she shot a 390.9 for a total of 1150. Weisz posted a 562 the second day and finished 15th.
“I am happy with how far I’ve come in two years,” Haig said. “This was my second appearance for air rifle and my first for smallbore. Qualifying for finals in both air and smallbore was an amazing experience, and I am glad Ali was able to join in me the air rifle finals. Not only was I able to represent my home state, I was able to represent Ole Miss. I am thankful for everyone who has helped me get to where I am.”
Sophomore Sarah Emery and freshman Kristyn Trump also competed at the Junior Olympics. Trump finished 39th in air rifle out of 184 competitors.
The Rebels will hold their end of the year banquet on April 30, where they will hand out team awards.
