Mississippi’s Greatest Athletes: Moss Point’s Hal B. ‘Sheriff’ Lee
Hal B. “Sheriff” Lee of Moss Point was a multi-sport athlete at Mississippi College, but it was baseball in which he had an extended career. His MC years were 1924-28, when he played football (1925-27), basketball (1925-27) and baseball (1925-28).
He was captain of the football team in 1927 and the baseball team in 1928. Then it was on to pro baseball and a lengthy career. He was with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1930, the Philadelphia Phillies from 1930- 33, the Boston Braves from 1933-36, the New York Giants in 1936-37, and Dallas in the Texas League in 1939-40.
He was also player-manager for Dallas in 1940. He had a career batting average of .275 and hit .303 twice. Lee died in 1984 at the age of 84.
