Ole Miss Women’s Golf Heads to SEC Championship
The Ole Miss women’s golf team is slated to compete in the SEC Women’s Golf Championship this weekend at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham, Alabama.
The Rebels last saw a course two weeks ago when they hosted the Rebel Intercollegiate at the Ole Miss Golf Course, where they earned a ninth-place finish.Leading the way this season for Ole Miss is senior Stani Schiavone (Bangor, Pa.) who has compiled a 74.57 scoring average in her seven tournament appearances with her best finish coming in the Samford Intercollegiate where she earned medalist honors.
Joining Schiavone in the Ole Miss lineup are Maria Toennessen (Grimstad, Norway), Sofia Idoyaga (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Alison Hovatter (Meridianville, Ala.) and Abby Newton (Katy, Texas). This will be the first SEC Championship experience for freshman Idoyaga who has improved throughout the course of the season and tied her career-low with a 73 in the second round of the Rebel Intercollegiate.
Head coach Michele Drinkard is excited to continue the late-season momentum push she’s seen from her team this weekend.
“I like where we are headed into the SEC Championship,” Drinkard said. “We have built good momentum as a team this spring and are looking forward to playing this course for the first time.”
The championship has been held the last two year’s on the Founders course at Greystone but this year the SEC teams will play the Legacy course. Legacy is par 72 and 6,308 yards.
The theme this season for the team has been having a clear mind and taking it one day at a time, and Drinkard looks for that to continue in Birmingham.
“Mindset and focus are our keys this week,” Drinkard added. “We know the forecast is showing quite a bit of rain, so as a result we will prepare to play in any type of conditions.”
Many of the top players in the nation come from the south, and eight teams in the top-25 come from the SEC.
The SEC Women’s Golf Championship tees off Friday at 9 a.m. in Birmingham. Fans can follow live scoring here.
