Ole Miss’ McGuigan Tabbed SEC Track & Field Freshman of the Week
Ole Miss’ Dempsey McGuigan has been named the Southeastern Conference Men’s Track & Field Freshman of the Week after another outstanding performance in the hammer throw last weekend in Starkville, Mississippi.
McGuigan, a redshirt-freshman competing in only his second college outdoor meet, won the hammer throw at the Border Clash between Mississippi and Alabama schools with a toss of 210-1.
An Irish native by way of high school in London, McGuigan set a school record of 212-7 at the previous week’s Tiger Track Classic. Although his mark of 210-1 was just shy of his record, it was still farther than all but one other thrower in school history (teammate Nathan Loe).
He currently ranks 14th in the NCAA and second-best among freshmen. He is fourth among SEC hammer throwers.
This is the second straight week that an Ole Miss freshman has received a weekly honor from the SEC. Shannon Raywas previously the SEC Women’s Freshman of the Week after a superb showing in the 100 meters and 4×100-meter relay in Auburn.
Ole Miss travels to the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville this weekend.
