Ole Miss Softball Host Southern Miss Doubleheader Wednesday
The Ole Miss softball team will continue its 13-game home stand on Wednesday, hosting the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss in a doubleheader beginning with first pitch in game one at 3 p.m. at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
The doubleheader was slated to begin at 4 p.m., but due to expected inclement weather in the area later that evening, the game times were moved up an hour to accommodate both teams and aid in completion of the twin bill.
Ole Miss (23-19) enters the doubleheader looking to make a strong push down the stretch of the season as a part of a week that features five non-conference games. The Rebels will follow up the doubleheader with Southern Miss by hosting the Louisville Cardinal in a three-game series over the weekend.
The Rebels are turning in one of the best offensive seasons on the diamond, hitting 35 home runs at this point to surpass last year’s home run total. Ole Miss has also gone 76-of-89 on steal attempts, stealing 16 more bases already this season than attempted in total last season.
The 23 wins passes last season’s win total with 14 games remaining in the regular-season schedule.
A trio of players pace the offense at the top of the lineup with Elantra Cox, Alex Schneider and Miranda Strother setting the tone. Cox is hitting at a .369 clip in the leadoff spot and ranks fourth in the Southeastern Conference in steals, going 24-for-30 on the year. She is second on the team in scoring with 28 runs scored this year.
Schneider paces the team’s power numbers, hitting eight home runs on the season and scoring a team-leading 30 runs on the year. She has also drawn a team-best 20 walks on the year and holds 19 RBI to date. Strother is hitting a team-leading .390 on the season with a team-leading 26 RBI and 24 runs scored from the three spot in the offensive lineup.
Ole Miss will continue to play at home next week, closing out the home portion of the regular season with a doubleheader against Alcorn State in the midweek and a three-game series in SEC play against South Carolina over the weekend.
