Shannon Ray Named SEC Freshman of the Week
Ole Miss sprinter Shannon Ray has been named Southeastern Conference Track & Field Women’s Freshman of the Week after her breakout weekend at Auburn.
A native of New Orleans, Ray clocked a personal-best 11.41 in the 100 meters to finish first among collegians and second overall at the Tiger Track Classic. Her time of 11.41 ranks her No. 2 in school history and sixth in the nation this year, while lowering her career best by more than .3 seconds (from 11.74).
She is now the top-ranked freshman in the SEC and the No. 2 freshman overall in the country in the 100.
She also helped the Rebels’ 4×100 relay team to a runner-up finish at 44.81 and placed fourth individually in the 200 at 24.08 in Auburn.
At just 19 years old, Ray currently ranks 22nd in the world in the 100 and helps Ole Miss rank 19th in the world in the 4×100-meter relay.
