Croft Institute to Host Visiting Speaker on Ukraine Crisis
Croft Institute for International Studies at University of Mississippi will host Professor William Risch from Georgia College to speak on the Ukraine conflict on April 7.
Prof. Risch’s visit is a part of the ongoing speaker series Croft offers its international majors. The associate professor of history at Georgia College in Milledgeville, Georgia, has extensive knowledge of Ukraine.
He has witnessed the Euromaidan protests in Kyiv, Kharkiv and Donetsk from 2013 to 2014. The summer of 2014 he volunteered at the Ukraine Crisis Media center as well as an elections monitor during Ukraine’s presidential elections last May and its parliamentary elections last October.
He authored a book The Ukrainian West: Culture and the Fate of Empire in Soviet Lviv (Harvard University Press, 2011). He also contributed to several journals from Journal of Contemporary History to Canadian-American Slavic Studies. He also was published in The Making of Russian History: Essays in Honor of Allan K. Wildman
He also edited an essay collection Youth and Rock in the Soviet Bloc: Youth Cultures, Music and the State in Russia and Eastern Europe (Lexington Books, 2015).
He is currently writing a book that documents his involvement with the Euromaidan protests in Ukraine.
The event will be held at 7 p.m. in The Joseph C. Bancroft Conference room (Croft 107) on Tuesday, April 7.
