Need plans for a fun, clean Saturday night? The Lafayette County Literacy Council is presenting Reads, Beats & Eats at the Lyric in celebration of local literary culture, food from local restaurants and music featuring the beloved Kudzu Kings.

The doors open at 7 p.m. and though the tickets are $50 the dress code is casual. These tickets are available at Oxford Family Pharmacy, Belles & Beaus on the Square and at the Lyric as well as from the board members of the Literary Council. There will be live and silent auctions with a wine pull. The benefits from this outing will fund the council’s programs for children and adult educational outreach.

Jennifer Yancy, vice president and fund development chair of the Lafayette County Literacy Council, said, “Reads, Beats & Eats is going to be a night of fun for a great cause. We’re excited to showcase Oxford’s finest – The Kudzu Kings, food from our community’s best restaurants and auction items from local business – to raise much-needed funds for the council’s work.”

Auction items include sideline passes to a home Ole Miss football SEC game, an overnight package at the Grand Hotel in Point Clear, Alabama, and a quail hunt from Little Q Ranch. An original painting by Oxonian Vicki Stevens, Diamond Club baseball tickets for the Texas A&M game and more will be at the auction too.

Ravine, Taylor Grocery and Proud Larry’s, Soulshine Pizza and Tre Amici, Oxford Canteen and McEwen’s will be among restaurants that selected the cuisine at the event. Paige Osborn, who owned longtime local favorite The Yocona River Inn, will also cook for the event.

“It really will be a sampling of some of the best Oxford and Lafayette County have to offer,” Yancy says.

Barksdale Reading Institute, Butler Snow LLP and Coleman Funeral Home, Hardy Reed LLC and Oxford Family Pharmacy are among the sponsors of the celebration of all things Oxford event.

The benefits will help the Lafayette County Literacy Council’s goals of improving quality of life in Oxford and Lafayette County through literacy and reading. Its four core programs are the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, the Children’s Book Festival and Reading Rockets and ABLE. ABLE is the council’s launched program geared towards helping adult illiteracy. Last year the council donated more than 10,500 books to local children and taught nearly 600 parents the importance of reading to their children from birth.
