Students, faculty and alumni in supportĀ of Chancellor Dan Jones came out in droves Wednesday afternoon to the Circle at the heart of the University of Mississippi campus to rally against the decision by Mississippi’s Institutions of Higher Learning board of trustees to not renew the leader’s contract.
As soon as news broke last week that a 9-2 decision by trustees would end Jones’ contract as of Sept. 14, social media responded with aĀ website, Facebook group, Twitter page, hashtagĀ and event for a peaceful rally “protesting the refusal of the Board of Trustees of the Institutions of Higher Learning to renew the contract of Chancellor Dan Jones.” The event gathered thousands of responses in support of the event and quickly spread the word throughout Rebel nation.
An estimated 2,500 supporters showed up at the rally, the largest turnout for a non-athletic event on campus in more than 37 years.
