The Good South, a Southern lifestyle clothing company based in Flowood, is accepting applications for its second annual The Good South scholarship for university students.

The company is owned by two University of Mississippi regional admissions counselors, Jason Welch and Steve Nelson. The two admissions counselors encountered numerous prospective students aspiring for higher education but had a shared concern with the counselors: the university costs.

“We’re very excited for the opportunity to provide scholarships for students who excel both inside and outside the classroom,” said Jason Welch, co-owner of The Good South. “We know firsthand how expensive college can be, and it’s our mission to help as many students as we can.”

The Good South opened in 2013 as an online retailer of handmade cotton bow ties created in the deep South. The store also sells t-shirts and hats. A portion of the store’s yearly earnings go into a fund for The Good South scholarship.

Hira Hasan, 2014 The Good South Scholarship recipient, said, “With financial support from The Good South, I am able to focus more on excelling academically and getting involved in my college community rather than stressing over school expenses. For that, I am more than thankful.”

The scholarship foundation is not only for students at University of Mississippi.

Co-owner, Steven Nelson, said “We’re looking for students who have a passion for service and excel both inside and outside the classroom, and we encourage all students to apply regardless of their college of choice.”

Both current and prospective university students can apply for the four scholarships that will be granted this May. The deadline for the The Good South Scholarship application is April 1. The Good South Scholarship Application is available online.
