For many Southerners, the weekend before Mardi Gras is the perfect time to have an excuse to go to New Orleans. The music, parades, and bevy of local food and drinks make Louisiana the ideal place to get the full Mardi Gras experience. However, for many, such a trip just may not be in the cards this year. How can Oxford residents staying in town still have an enjoyable Mardi Gras experience?

Local favorite Proud Larry’s on the Square provides the answer. The diner and bar plans to have a variety of festivities on Fat Tuesday.

yalobusha beerOn Tuesday, Feb. 17, Proud Larry’s has even more activities planned. Starting at 5 p.m., the restaurant will have crawfish and Yalobusha brewing. If you, like myself, are ignorant on what Yalobusha is, Proud Larry’s owner and founder Scott has some insight.

“Yalobusha is a brewery in Water Valley. It’s basically local, micro-brewed beer. We try to promote them as much as we can.”

The Yalobusha beer will be provided on tap along with conventional beer for the non-experimental out of us. Music will be provided from local band Tate Moore and The Hayseeds. Tate Moore also started the local band Kudzu Kings and is the owner of Square Pizza. The band will be playing an acoustic set to accompany the crawfish and Yalobusha festivities.

Scott says Fat Tuesday at Proud Larry’s will be a “fun little Mardi Gras afternoon.” With music all weekend leading up to the big event, the venue will surely be the place to be for some local New-Orleans style entertainment.
