A’Queen Hayes Named SEC Freshman of the Week
Ole Miss Freshman guard A’Queen Hayes was named SEC Freshman of the Week after her performances in Ole Miss’ wins over Florida and Alabama last week. Hayes posted her first career double-double with 15 points and a career-high 10 rebounds against the Gators and added 10 points in a win over Alabama.
This SEC accolade is the first for Hayes and is the first Freshman of the Week honor for an Ole Miss player since the 2010-11 season. Hayes joins teammate Tia Faleru, who was named SEC Player of the Week on Dec. 22, as Ole Miss players to earn SEC honors this week.
Hayes has really taken her game to the next level since being inserted into the starting lineup against South Alabama on Dec. 14. For the week, Hayes averaged 12.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals while helping lead the Rebels to back-to-back SEC wins for the first time since 2011-12. In Ole Miss’ road win at Florida, Hayes became the first Ole Miss freshman to record a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, as Ole Miss snapped a 14-game SEC road losing streak. Against Alabama, the Horn Lake, Mississippi native added 10 points and five rebounds, while posting double-figures for the third straight game.
With her 10 points against Alabama, Hayes has been in double figures in five of Ole Miss’ last seven outings. Hayes has scored in 14 of Ole Miss’ 17 games and is averaging 10.6 points since entering the starting lineup and 10.5 points in SEC action.
Ole Miss is back on the hardwood on Thursday when they welcome the No. 19 Georgia Lady Bulldogs to Tad Smith Coliseum. The game will be available on SECN+ with Will Kollmeyer and Armintie Herrington on the call. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
