The Ole Miss Rebel Landshark defense backfield has been anchored this season by senior Senquez Golson, who has been electrifying to watch on the field and a true testament to why the Ole Miss defense is so dominant.
J5184x3456-1708In 2014, Golson lead the Rebels and the Southeastern Conference in interceptions with nine along with 41 tackles on the season. With that type of a performance, he was a unanimous First team All-American.
“It’s a blessing to get any individual honors, but it kinda helps when you got this d-line that I have,” Golson said. “With a great coaching staff that puts a great plain together every week and a lot of things just came together as a whole to be able achieve something like this.”
During the season, teams started to know what type of a weapon Golson was in the Rebel secondary and started throwing away from where he was on the field.
Looking towards the matchup with the TCU Horned Frogs on New Year’s Eve in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl and high powered explosive offense, Golson said the Horned Frogs don’t just go to one side of the field with plays, but to all parts of the field with playmakers all around so the defense can’t just focus on one or two key players. With a mobile quarterback, it can always be a red flag for a defense.
The Rebels defense has faced QBs in the past that are like Trevone Boykin of TCU in State’s Dak Prescott, Alabama’s Blake Sims and Texas A&M’s Johnny Manizel enough to know the defender on him will need to make a play.
“The wide receivers can run, they can make plays on the balls in the air and just a great group of receivers,” Golson said. “Probably the best group we will play.”
Going into his final game, Golson is not quit sure if he is going to test the waters of the NFL draft or go play his senior season over on the diamond at Swayze field. He stated he was going to have to wait and decide after the bowl game.
With the game drawing, near one thing is for sure — Golson and his teammates that make up Landshark defense will put it all out on the line against one of the top offense’s in the country.
