Oxford Civic Chorus Performs at Ford Center Tonight
HottyToddy.com contributor Steve Vassallo recently caught up with Brooke Worthy, the artistic director for the Oxford Civic Chorus. Tonight at the Ford Center, there will be a very special event Free at Last at 7:30 p.m. Before we describe this unique show, a little about the director first.
Brooke majored in Music at Ole Miss where she met (and married) her college professor, Michael. She is a former recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship, where she invested one year in Hungary (2004-2005) perfecting her talent. She is a native of Forest.
A truly gifted and exceptionally bright (no pun intended) individual, Brooke has led the chorus for the previous six years which now totals 55 singers from all conceivable backgrounds. The chorus was created in the 1998.
Tonight’s presentation will also showcase the Oxford High School Choir, the Lafayette High School Choir and Blue Ten Harmony. Brooke will be directing the affair which will also include the University Gospel Choir and the Mississippians Jazz Band (one of the oldest jazz bands in the country) being featured.
Here’s how Brooke describes tonight’s performance Free At Last:
“The Oxford Civic Chorus will be presenting a work by Dr. Lena McLin. Dr. McLin grew up with Martin Luther King, Jr. in Atlanta, Georgia. She wrote this piece to honor the memory of her friend. This is a great opportunity to hear an important piece that is rarely performed in the United States. In addition, the concert on Monday night brings together some wonderful ensembles in one venue to commemorate a very important event in Mississippi history, the 50th anniversary of Mississippi Freedom Summer.”

For anyone interested you can visit their website to learn more about the organization. The concert should run about two hours and will truly be a blessing to all ears at the Ford Center tonight.
There are so many incredible people like Brooke here in Oxford that it is difficult (if not impossible) to keep track with all of these unique personalities. It’s no wonder we’re the leading university retirement community in the nation according to many. Brooke Worthy only “seconds that emotion.”
