Sorority Competition Theta Encore Exceeds Expectations
Theta Encore, an annual dance competition between the sororities, hit the stage again last night, and the competition was fierce.
Theta Encore is Kappa Alpha Theta’s philanthropy event benefiting CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and the Scarlet Akins Foundation. Kappa Delta placed first, Delta Gamma second, and Tri Delta third. Before the event Tuesday, 100 people crowded lined up around the Ford Center, waiting for the doors to open to get good seats.
“I’m excited to see all the costumes and themes,” said Kasey Killion, a sophomore at Ole Miss. “I can’t wait to see what the competition is going to do. I’m pumped!”
Theta Encore is a competition between each sorority’s pledge class performing a themed dance taught to them by a group of actives. The judges give scores based on on costumes, theme, overall, and blood drive participation. Theta Encore is a much-anticipated fall event for each sorority. Whoever wins will boast about it for the next year and performs first in the next year’s competition.
The blood drive occurs the week before, and whichever sorority has the most people donate blood in their name wins bonus points. This year the blood drive saved 1,638 lives, and the winners were Delta Gamma, then Chi Omega, followed by Pi Beta Phi.
The event was hosted by a witty duo in Theta Jackie and Mr. Theta Encore, Dylan, a Phi Tau. The event started off with Theta’s performance, who isn’t part of the competition but they still perform every year for fun. This year, they did a TV show theme and performed a dance for Duck Dynasty, Fashion Police, Jersey Shore, Hanna Montana, Man versus Wild, the news and ESPN.
The actives and new members from each sorority have been rehearsing and planning for weeks hoping to win the competition. The auditorium was filled with sorority girls, who went crazy whenever their house came on stage.
“Theta Encore preparation has been a really fun introduction to Greek life here. It helped me meet a lot of people in my pledge class,” said freshman, Sara Wilson. “Today, all the older girls in AOPi came to the house and helped us get ready for tonight. It is a good bonding experience.”
Theta Encore is a dance competition filled with outrageous costumes, fun music, and creative themes. The themes included:

- Delta Gamma — Around the World
- Kappa Alpha Theta — TV Shows
- Kappa Delta — Willy Wonka
- Kappa Kappa Gamma — New York City
