Taste of the Game: Try Lamar Lounge for Atmosphere, Good Eats
Every once and a while, it’s nice to step away from the crowds that fill the bars and restaurants on the Square. Take a little drive to North Lamar during a game weekend and experience a classic, yet eclectic, spot that offers an indoor and outdoor escape perfect for a game-day experience without all the hustle and bustle.
I wouldn’t have ever guessed that when I first rolled into town two years ago the place with the oversized “BAR” sign would become a local favorite staple of mine. What I love about Lamar Lounge is that you feel like you’re in a few different places at once. We all secretly wish we could be five places at the same time, especially when it means having good brews, bbq and company.
Oh, where to start with all the good vibes that surround your experience at Lamar Lounge? Whether you will be starting your pre-game day activities, or swinging in for a little late-night fun, you’ll love the menu and music.
Let me tell you, it doesn’t hurt to be the only restaurant that features the only pit-smoked, whole-hog barbecue in Mississippi. You can enjoy a tasty glass of bourbon and smoke a cigar outside while watching the pit crew at work on the patio. When that’s done, enjoy the intimate lodge setting with fireplaces, jukeboxes and music.
As far as eats, there is something for everyone. You also get a chance to give something back to others. All profits from Lamar Lounge are donated to Mississippi not-for-profit organizations.
Here are some of my quick recommendations from the menu. For all you Texans here in Oxford, you will love the pit-smoked Beef Brisket plate or sandwich. You can’t go wrong with any of their burgers, either. For you vegetarians, Lamar’s black bean burger is a winner. Now, if you manage to have room for dessert, check out the molasses pecan pie.
Well as I like to say, if you’re looking for a place with all the game-day perks, but away from the hustle and bustle, Lamar Lounge is the ticket. Hotty Toddy Y’all.
