Tracy Brooks, an assistant professor at School of Pharmacy at University of Mississippi, received a $333,878 grant from the Department of Defense (DOD) to study a cancer gene called kRAS. Brooks applied for and obtained this grant through the DOD’s Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program herself as part of ongoing research expectation of faculty at School of Pharmacy. Only 16 percent of applications submitted to that organization were selected for funding this year. She will be the grant’s primary investigator into the DNA production of kRAS and utilizing the discoveries to develop more efficient drugs for cancer treatment.
Cancer is a personal battle to Brooks. She lost her grandmother, cousins, friends and her husband’s grandfather to cancer. She also cared for her husband during his fight with cancer of which he is now a three year survivor.
“I’ve dedicated my career, and my life, to researching and combating this disease.” Brooks said, “I have traveled across the nation from Arizona to southern Florida to New York to here, researching cancer development and treatments.”
Brooks teaches full-time, even through the summer. She also teaches an elective class that she enjoys well: cancer biology in which her students learn about how cancer is developed, who are likely candidates for cancer diagnosis, where cancer can come from and possible causes of it. Brooks hopes to teach a self-defense class at University of Mississippi when her tenure is finished.

On this Saturday, Sept. 27th, HottyToddy.com wishes Coach Hugh Freeze a very happy birthday! Coach Freeze has led the Ole Miss Rebels forwards and upwards since the disheartening 2 – 10, 0 SEC wins season finish months before Freeze began as their new head coach in December 2011. He said during the press conference announcing his role as the head coach that he wanted to retire at Ole Miss.
The first season Ole Miss in 2012 improved to 6 – 6 record, making them bowl eligible for the first time since 2009 with a tremendous victory over Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl. Coach Freeze brought national cameras to Ole Miss on National Signing Day 2013 as Ole Miss welcomed the fifth ranked recruiting class with powerhouses such as Robert Nkemdiche and Laquon Treadwell. Coach Freeze also won the 2014 FCA Coach of the year award.
May he have a very hotty toddy birthday today! We are grateful for all that he has done for Ole Miss Rebels!

The little shop has received national attention from The New York Times to The Wall Street Journal. The store works with several artists as they create exclusive items from housewares to stationery to jewelry to baby items.
Abbott traveled all over the country for work. in 2005 she wanted to get back to her roots in Oxford. She dreamed of a shop that would have items she wouldn’t find anywhere else, and with the expansive artistic community in Oxford she created Amelia.
