Sen. Cochran's Staff Visits OSD, Learn About Good Food for Oxford Schools
Longtime Sen. Thad Cochran’s staff made a visit to Della Davidson Elementary School Tuesday afternoon to discuss the new initiatives in the district to make the school meals and children healthier.
Though Cochran was unable to make the trip after visiting the Delta earlier that day, his staff members enjoyed a presentation from Good Food for Oxford Schools program director Sunny Young about their program to bring healthy and local foods to Oxford School District.
Since the beginning of the program, the made from scratch portions of meals has risen from 30 percent to 75 percent. Superintendent Brian Harvey said he supports the initiative fully and knows that the entire district must be involved to make a change in the students’ lives; the administration, the cafeteria staff and the teachers must all work together to instill a love of kale, kiwi and other produce.
Principal LaTonya Robinson said she has seen her students’ attitudes toward food change, embracing the good foods thanks to the excitement Young and her team brings to the initiative.
