The Ole Miss Health and Sports Performance Department is excited to announce the addition of Dr. Marshall Crowther as medical director.
Crowther comes to Ole Miss from the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he was a sports medicine physician for UAB athletics.
“Dr. Crowther’s addition to the staff allows us to continue to lead the way in best practices for sports medicine in the collegiate setting,” said Shannon Singletary, Ole Miss senior associate athletics director for health and sports performance. “His past experience as team physician at UAB and his sports medicine fellowship training with Dr. James Andrews has prepared him well to deliver an evidenced based medical practice to all of our athletes here at Ole Miss. We are delighted to add his services to our health and sports performance program.”
Crowther first realized his love for athletics when he ran cross country and track during middle school and high school. Crowther began his schooling at Clemson and continued his education at the Medical School of South Carolina. Crowther ventured further into his passion of sports medicine by acquiring a fellowship with Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama. Being able to learn from a leader in the orthopedic field as Andrews is truly brought forth his passion to stay and find a position where he could continue working with athletes.
He was then hired on at UAB and work with a mentor in orthopedic surgeon Dr. Bill Garth. When the Ole Miss athletics medical director position became open, Crowther said he was intrigued by the job model – which is medical director for health and sports performance but housed under student health – set up that is currently endorsed by the NATA.
“While It is exciting to come to a place with as rich of a tradition and history as Ole Miss, it is also one that I think has the opportunity to be at the forefront and seen as a model for best practices in collegiate sports medicine, which has been put in place by the visionary athletic leadership here,” Crowther said. “The beneficiaries of this model will truly be the student-athletes at Ole Miss.
“I have been fortunate to have been able to work under and be associated with many giants in the realm of both sports and medicine and I am grateful for the opportunities they have given me in leading me to this opportunity here. Most recently, having the opportunity to work with Ole Miss alumnus and current medical director of UAB Sports Medicine, Dr. Bill Garth, a national leader in patellar femoral joint pain, I began to become aware of what special places Ole Miss and Oxford are. Having the great fortune of being able to train in sports medicine at the American Sports Medicine Institute with Dr. James Andrews, Dr. Michael Goodlet (team physician at Auburn), and Dr. Tracy Ray (Duke University) was a highlight that solidified my passion for sports medicine. I’ve also had the opportunity to be associated with great coaches through the journey, especially coach Rick Barnes (head basketball coach at the University of Texas), who has been a great friend and mentor to me for many years and stages of my life, dating back to my time as a college student.”
Crowther oversees all 18 Ole Miss sports teams as the medical director. Half of his time is spent as a physician at the student health center, while also covering the medical needs of Ole Miss athletes, which creates a great working relationship with everyone on campus. Crowther provides an easily accessible medical care for the student athletes and is able to refer them as needed.
