4 Free Ways to Shake Up Your September in Oxford

Tired of the typical bar scene? Here’s a list of eclectic events that are easy on the wallet and promise a good time.
1. Bloomingdale’s Fashion Touchdown
MuseumVenue: The University of Mississippi Museum, Intersection of South 5th and University Avenue
Date: Every Tuesday through Saturday until January 17, 2015
Time: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Reason to go: According to the website, “This exciting exhibit features one-of-a-kind football helmets, created by world-famous fashion designers for an auction to benefit the NFL Foundation. The University of Mississippi Museum acquired three helmets, featured in the exhibition with photographs of the remaining 45 helmets.” Bloomingdale’s Fashion Touchdown is the only exhibit of its kind; perfect for all of the fashionistas and sports fanatics out there. Don’t forget to bring your student ID for free admission.
2. Thacker Mountain Radio Show
SbooksVenue: Off Square Books, 129 Courthouse Square
Date: Sept. 18 & 25
Time: 6 p.m.
Reason to go: According the website, “Thacker hosts an eclectic mix of local and national writers and musicians, performing before a live and loyal audience in Off Square books.” Whether you’re a book lover or avid music junkie this is the place to be.
“It’s really cool, it keeps you up to date with local talent and authors and gets you involved in the Oxford community,” said Leslie Dickinson, an intern for Thacker Mountain Radio Show.
3. September Art Crawl
phouseVenue: Powerhouse, 413 S 14th St.
When: Sept. 23
Time: 6-8 p.m.
Reason to go: Your DD is the Double Decker, need we say more? According to VisitOxfordMS, “Meet at the Powerhouse to climb aboard the Double Decker bus as it takes you to some of Oxford’s finest art destinations.”
“It’s really, really fun, it’s kind of like a little secret hidden thing and then once you find out about it, it’s really fun to enjoy,” said Rebecca Phillips, Membership, Events and Communications Coordinator of The University of Mississippi Museum.
Lamar4. Lamar Lounge September Movie Nights
Venue: 1309 N Lamar Blvd.
Date: Sept. 17 & 24
Time: 9:30 p.m.
Reason to go: As if you needed another reason to go Lamar Lounge besides the amazing burgers and handsome bar, now on Wednesday nights they are hosting a free movie night with free popcorn and drink specials.
“Their ambiance is great, but add a free movie and free popcorn with my beer and I was set for the night,” said Fathom Hefner, a student at the University of Mississippi.
Instead of suffering from cover fees at the bars, enjoy a bit of culture for free.

    The Lafayette County & Oxford Public Library is hosting a free clothing swap on Thursday, September 18th from 5:00-6:30 pm. Bring gently used items of clothing and swap them for something new to you.
