Walt Disney: Think, Believe, Dream and Dare

I want to tell you a story about me. I had always wanted to meet the wisest man in the world. I went up to this man, and said, “Sir, I understand that you are one of the wisest men in the world. I would like to be like you when I grow up. How could I be?” And the man told me the following. He said, “Tommy, there are four words that I would like to speak to you. And I think when you grow up, if you practice these four words, you will have the opportunity of being a wise man.” He said, Tommy, the first word is THINK. Think about the values and principles that you are going to live by. The second word, Tommy, is to BELIEVE. Believe in yourself, based on the thinking that you have done about the values and the principles that you are going to live by. The third word, Tommy, is to DREAM. Dream about something that you want to be, based on the belief in yourself, which is based on the thinking that you have done about the values and the principles that you are going to live by. He said, “The last word is DARE, Tom. Dare to make your dream a reality, based on your beliefs in yourself, which is based on the thinking you have done about the values and the principles that you are going to live by.”
And then, in front of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, by Snow White’s Wishing Well, Walt Disney said to me “Let me tell you those four words again.
” THINK….BELIEVE….DREAM….and DARE….”
So, I dare myself to be what I know I can and want to be.
As a leader, deciding to make changes is the easy part. Getting your people on board is much more difficult because change is an emotional process. But change is the key that unlocks the doors to growth and excitement in any organization.
