“We’re excited to announce Mike Clement as our new hitting coach here at Ole Miss,” said head coach Mike Bianco. “He brings great experience and a wealth of knowledge with him to our program. He’s had success everywhere he has been with some outstanding programs. Mike stood out amongst many great candidates for this position. He will be in charge of our hitters and will assist our recruiting coordinator, Carl Lafferty, on the recruiting trail.”
Clement joins the Ole Miss coaching staff after spending the last two seasons coaching at Kansas State University. In his two years at K-State, he helped vault the Wildcats to success with Kansas State claiming the Big 12 Championship and coming within a game of the College World Series in 2013 and ranking in the top 10 nationally in six offensive categories – including second nationally in batting average.
This past season, Clement again helped produce one of the nation’s top offenses as the Wildcats ranked in the top five in the Big 12 in on base percentage, runs per game and batting average. Kansas State also ranked in the top 25 nationally in on base percentage and 18th in stolen bases while scoring almost six runs per game.
Prior to his time at Kansas State, Clement spent three years as an assistant at Texas A&M and four seasons at UT-San Antonio. He helped the Aggies advance to the postseason in all three seasons, including a Big 12 regular-season title, tournament title and College World Series appearance in 2011. Texas A&M also claimed the Big 12 Championship in 2010 with Clement directing the offense.
In his nine years as an assistant coach, Clement has coached 11 All-America selections, 17 MLB Draft picks and 57 All-Conference selections. He has also coached a pair of Big 12 Player of the Year selections.
Prior to his stint at UTSA, Clement served as an assistant for one year at Kirkwood Junior College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, and then spent one year at Loyola High School in Los Angeles. He was also an assistant coach for the Orleans Cardinals in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League in the summers of 2005 and 2006, including a Cape Cod Championship in 2005.
A former college catcher, Clement played two seasons at Kirkwood, helping the Eagles compile a 91-25 record. He finished his college career at Morningside, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education/secondary education in 2002. Following college, the Marshalltown, Iowa, native played professionally one season for the Canton Coyotes of the Frontier League.
