Bousfield Beer Shower Bash Bags 2-1 Win
When is one beer shower the margin of difference in a thrilling Rebel victory?
When Auston Bousfield hits a home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the fifth to lead Oe Miss to a 2-1 victory over Washington and a chokehold on the Oxford Regional.
Ole Miss will face the winner of the Washington, Georgia Tech game this evening in the championship tomorrow at 2 p.m.
This game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth with the Rebels Christian Trent and Huskies Jeff Brigham mowing down both potent offenses. In that frame, J.B . Woodman’s double chased home Will Allen who had singled.
Trent pitched out of jam in the top of the fifth when a fly-out retired the Huskies with runners on first and third.
Bousfield’s homer in the bottom of the inning was a rocket shot that disappeared into the deliriously happy bleacher fans in left. The four-bagger set off a beer shower that may have brought down more moisture than the drizzle that pestered the wild crowd periodically in the early innings.
With the score now 2-0, Trent continued to befuddle the hapless Huskies until the top of the seventh when they rattled the cagy left-hander for the first time. With 1 out and 1 run already in, Coach Mike Bianco made his second trip to the mound lifting Trent and summoning fireballing right-hander Aaron Greenwood.
No. 44 was sensational striking out the first batter he faced and retiring the next hitter on a liner to second to preserve the 2-1 lead and lift the delighted Swayze faithful to their feet.
It wasn’t the last time he’d make them stand. In the ninth inning the screaming crowd was on its feet the whole frame as Greenwood finished off the Huskies, who left one frustrated runner on. The game ended for Greenwood with a strikeout, just as it started.
Here are the sights and flavors of the game. If you strain your ears you might hear the roar of the crowd or even feel the chilled spray of a cold one on your your skin. That’s just a warm-up for the goosebumps coming tomorrow at a rocking Swayze Regional championship game.
