Rebels Crush Jacksonville State, Move On in Regional
The Rebels woke up from their sloppy play against Arkansas in the SEC tournament and put a hurting on outgunned Jacksonville State, 12-2.
Ole Miss had 17 hits in their Regional opener, including a two-run home run by Sikes Orvis, in running away from the Gamecocks, who struggled hitting Ole Miss starter Chris Ellis.
Ellis gave up only 8 hits in gaining the complete game victory.
Unlike the last time Ole Miss got off to an early lead against Arkansas last week, the Rebels refused to let the Gamecocks get back in the game. Chris Smith pitched a gritty ball game spacing 8 hits over 9 innings.
The Rebels ran the base paths aggressively and hit every Gamecock pitcher hard in the contest.
After spotting the Gamecocks a run in the first inning, Orvis put the Rebels back in front with a 2-run double in the bottom of the first. The Rebels never looked back scoring big in multiple innings. Orvis, who has been in a mild slump, capped off the fireworks with a 2-run homer to right that sent the crowd into a frenzy and beer into the air in the outfield bleachers.
The elimination game tomorrow between Jacksonville State and Georgia Tech will take place at 11 a.m. Ole Miss will take on Washington at 3 p.m. and the loser of that game will take on the winner of the Jacksonville State, Georgia Tech game at 7 p.m.
Here are the images from today’s win including plenty of shots of the near capacity crowd at a raucous Swayze.
