Ole Miss Athletics delivered a 35-foot trailer stacked full of donations on Monday to help storm victims around Mississippi.
Through the Rebel Relief Project, the athletics department asked fans and area residents to provide food, clothing and household items for tornado victims across Mississippi at various locations in Oxford over the weekend.
“The response was incredible from both the local community and the many Rebel fans that came to town for the weekend baseball series,” said Kyle Campbell, Ole Miss Assistant Athletics Director. “There are so many people hurting in our state at this time, and we want to do everything we can to help with the healing process.”
Rebel student-athletes and staff volunteered in the donation process at Wal-Mart on Saturday and Larson’s Cash Saver on Sunday. Both host businesses contributed to the cause along with Ole Miss concessions partner, Centerplate, while the athletics department supplemented the collection with hundreds of Nike shirts and Gatorade products.
Driven by Don and Donnie Smith, the Rebel football equipment truck delivered the donations to the Salvation Army and American Red Cross in Tupelo on Monday. Ole Miss senior administrative secretary Laura Webb played a key role in the project.
In addition to Rebel Relief, several Ole Miss teams are planning trips to devastated towns to help in the cleanup process. Louisville is the hometown of Ole Miss head men’s basketball coach Andy Kennedy, and he and members of his program are visiting that area in the coming days.
